August always brings a particular kind of energy to our practice, and this year was no exception. As summer winds down and families across the Syracuse area start checking off their back-to-school to-do lists, we see a familiar and meaningful surge in young adults taking care of long-overdue dental concerns before the fall semester begins. It’s one of my favorite times of year — not just because the work is rewarding, but because it reminds me how proactive this community is about health when the timing finally lines up.

This August, we were glad to serve seventeen patients from the Syracuse ZIP code of 84075, and the procedure mix told a very clear seasonal story. Wisdom tooth extractions dominated our month, with twelve completed procedures — a number that reflects exactly what we’d expect when college-aged patients come home for the summer and parents seize the window before everyone heads back to school or out of state. Six additional surgical extractions rounded out a busy schedule of complex removal cases, each one representing a patient who no longer has to carry the discomfort or risk of a compromised tooth into the coming months.

Alongside the extractions, we placed four dental implants for patients in the Syracuse community who were ready to take the next step toward a complete, confident smile. Implant placement is one of the most gratifying procedures I perform — it’s a long-term investment in quality of life, and seeing patients make that commitment is genuinely encouraging. We also completed one oral biopsy this month, a reminder that early evaluation of unusual tissue changes is always worth pursuing. I can’t stress enough that an oral biopsy is a routine, often reassuring procedure, and catching anything abnormal early is always in a patient’s best interest.

The seasonal pattern we see every August in the Syracuse area is worth talking about openly. Summer break creates a narrow but valuable window — students are home, schedules are temporarily more flexible, and wisdom teeth that have been quietly causing trouble finally get the attention they deserve. Recovery from wisdom tooth surgery is significantly easier to manage when someone isn’t juggling classes or a new job.
